THE DOCTRINE OF LAST THINGS
ESCHATOLOGY
Section I
ESCHATOLOGY IS CENTERED AROUND SEVEN MAJOR JUDGMENTS IN THE BIBLE
I. THE CROSS OF CALVARY
NOTE: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24
II. IN DAILY LIFE
NOTE: For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
I Corinthians 11:31-32
III. THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST
NOTE: If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
I Corinthians 3:15-19
IV. JUDGMENT OF ISRAEL
NOTE: As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you: And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out.
Ezekiel 20:33-34
V. JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS
NOTE: Matthew 25:31-46
VI. JUDGMENT OF SATAN AND HIS ANGELS
NOTE: And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20:10
VII. THE GREAT WHITE THRONE
NOTE: And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:11-15
We believe that there is a radical and essential difference between the righteous and the wicked; that such only as through faith are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and sanctified by the Spirit of our God, are truly righteous in His esteem; while all such as continue in impenitence and unbelief are in His sight wicked, and under the curse, and this distinction holds among men both in and after death, in the everlasting felicity of the saved and the everlasting conscious suffering of the lost.
Section II
THE MAJOR OLD TESTAMENT
COVENANTS RELATIVE TO ESCHATOLOGY
I. THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT
A. The Three Sections
1. The Land
NOTE: And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.
Genesis 13:14-18
2. The Seed
NOTE: Genesis 15:1-21
3. The Covenant
NOTE: Genesis 17:1-17
B. Promises Made By God In The Covenant
1. Abraham’s name shall be great
2. A great nation shall come from him
3. In him shall all the nations of the earth be blessed
4. To him and his seed will be given Palestine forever
5. His descendants shall number as the dust of the earth
6. Those that bless him shall be blessed; Those that curse him shall be cursed
7. He should be the father of many nations
8. The covenant shall be everlasting
9. The land shall be an everlasting possession
10. God will be God to him and his seed
11. His seed shall possess the gates of his enemies
NOTE: And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18
C. The Abrahamic Covenant Is: Unconditional
1. All of God’s covenants with Israel are unconditional except the: Mosaic
2. The New Testament affirms the Abrahamic Covenant cannot be broken
NOTE: For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us
Hebrews 6:13-18
NOTE: Genesis 15:8-21
II. THE PALESTINIAN COVENANT
NOTE: And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee, And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul; That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee: And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers. And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which persecuted thee. And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day. And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers: If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
Deuteronomy 30:1-10
NOTE: And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
Genesis 12:7
NOTE: Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. Genesis 13:12
NOTE: And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
Genesis 17:7-8
A. The Main Features Of The Palestinian Covenant
1. The nation will be removed from the land because of unfaithfulness
NOTE: And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.
Deuteronomy 28:63-68
NOTE: And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee, And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul; That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.
Deuteronomy 30:1-3
2. There will be a future repentance of Israel
3. Messiah will return
NOTE: That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.
Deuteronomy 30:3-6
4. Israel will be restored to the land
NOTE: But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see. Deuteronomy 3:28
5. Israel will be converted as a nation
NOTE: If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee: And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.
Deuteronomy 30:4-8
NOTE: And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
Romans 11:26-27
6. Israel’s enemies will be judged

7. The nation will then receive her full blessing
NOTE: And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers Deuteronomy 30:9
B. The Importance Of The Covenant
1. God views Israel’s association to the land as a fact of profound importance
2. God calls this covenant an eternal covenant
NOTE: Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant.
And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD
Ezekiel 16:60-62
C. The Only Conditional Element Of This Covenant
1. The time element
NOTE: when … then”
2. The time depends upon the conversion of the nation
III. THE DAVIDIC COVENANT
NOTE: And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children’s children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever. Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. Section III
THE FOUR BASIC VIEWS ON ESCHATOLOGY
NOTE: All these views relate to the millennium
I. THE SPIRITUALIZED VIEW
A. Denies There Will Be A Literal, Bodily, Personal Return Of Christ To The Earth
B. A Spiritualizing Method Of Interpretation Of Scripture
1. Christ returns at conversion
2. Christ returns when a Christian dies
II. THE POSTMILLENNIAL VIEW
A. A Literal: Millennium
B. A Literal: Return Of Christ
C. Christ Will Come At The: End Of The Millennium
1. The Gospel will be preached in all the world
2. The world will be Christianized
3. Then after 1,000 years Christ will come
III. THE AMILLENNIAL VIEW
A. No Literal Millennium
B. The State Of The Millennium Or Kingdom
1. All prophecies concerning the kingdom are being fulfilled now by the church
2. What prophecies are not fulfilled now by the church will be fulfilled by the church in heaven
C. A Literal Return Of Christ
1. He will come literally to earth
2. The eternal state will begin immediately following the return of Christ
IV. THE PREMILLENNIAL VIEW
A. A Literal: Bodily Return Of Christ
B. A Literal: Millennium
C. The Order Of Events
1. Christ will return
2. He alone will establish His kingdom
Section IV
VIEWS ON THE RAPTURE
I. THE PARTIAL RAPTURE
A. Not All Believers Will Be Raptured
B. Qualifications To Be Raptured
1. Have to be “watching” and “waiting”
2. Have to have reached a certain level of spiritual maturity
C. One Group That Believes In A Partial Rapture Is The “Baptist Bride”
Partial Rapture
II. THE POSTTRIBULATION RAPTURE
A. The Church Will Go Through The Tribulation
B. A Denial Of The Imminency Of The Return Of Christ
NOTE: In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14:2-3
NOTE: For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
Philippians 3:20-21
NOTE: For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
I Thessalonians 1:9-10
NOTE: For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
I Thessalonians 4:16-17
NOTE: Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ
I Thessalonians 5:5-9
NOTE: Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ Titus 2:13
NOTE: Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
James 5:8-9
NOTE: Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Revelation 3:10
NOTE: And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
Revelation 22:17-21
C. A Denial Of Dispensational Distinctives, Which Are:
1. The Church is not Israel
2. The tribulation is concerning Israel not the Church (Daniel’s 70th week)
NOTE: Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Daniel 9:24-27
Post Tribulation Rapture
III. THE MIDTRIBULATION RAPTURE
A. The Church Will Be Raptured In The Middle Of The Tribulation
1. When the seventh trumpet sounds in Revelation 11
2. When the two witnesses are caught up in Revelation 11
B. No Distinctions Between Israel And The Church
C. This Position Is A Compromise Between The Posttribulation And Pretribulation Positions
IV. THE PRETRIBULATION RAPTURE
A. The Church, In Its Entirety, Will Be Raptured
1. “Church” is used in a generic sense
2. Another term used is: The body of Christ
3. Paul uses the term: In Christ
B. The Two Classes Raptured
1. The resurrected
2. The translated
C. All “In Christ” Will Be Taken Out (Along With The Restrainer) Before Daniel’s Seventieth Week
Section V
THE ESCHATOLOGICAL EVENTS FOLLOWING THE ASCENSION
NOTE: Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, Who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven Acts 1:11
I. THE CHURCH AGE
A. Also Called: The Dispensation Of Grace
B. Time Length: Unknown
II. THE RAPTURE
A. At The End Of The Church Age
B. At The Beginning Of The Tribulation
C. “Rapture” Comes From The Latin: Rapturo, “caught up”
NOTE: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. I Thessalonians 4:17
III. THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST
NOTE: Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
I Corinthians 3:12-15
IV. THE MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB
NOTE: Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Revelation 19:7-10
V. THE TRIBULATION
A. Also Called: The Time Of Jacob’s Trouble
B. Time Length: Seven years
C. It Pertains To Israel, Not The Church
NOTE: The Judgment Seat of Christ and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb occur concurrently with the Tribulation
VI. THE BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON
NOTE: And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
Revelation 19:17-19
VII. ONE THOUSAND YEAR REIGN OF CHRIST
NOTE: Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. Revelation 20:6
VIII. SATAN LOOSED FOR A LITTLE SEASON
NOTE: And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation 20:7-10
IX.
